Sing a Song of Christmas

“Whenever I see girls and boys selling lanterns on the
street,
I remember the child in the manger as he sleeps…”

And so the song goes. But how can lanterns remind us of a sleeping baby? How can children selling stuffs remind us of a season worth celebrating? How can those children be associated with Christmas when they only have a vague perception of it? How does a child these days celebrate Christmas? How do they define Christmas?

There are so many things around us that are use to symbolize Christmas. People sometimes see Christmas with decorated pine trees, colorful twinkling lights, joyful sound of Christmas carols, and the unknown relation of Frosty the Snowman to Christmas. And for us Filipinos, the Pinoy version of the star in Bethlehem that one faithful night, known as the “parol”. However, he star that once led the wise men to the baby Jesus seemed to slowly lose its luster and brilliance as the meaning of Christmas become obscure, especially to those little children often associated to during Christmas season,  with each passing years. At least this is what the Inkrush has noticed.

Since children take their share of spotlight during these times, Inkrush took the liberty of asking a few of them about their Christmas. This conversation led to what they have had as their Noche Buena.

Lost in Translation

Jericho, 10, who was first asked about the subject, could not answer. A few moments later it came to our knowledge that the boy doesn’t know what the meaning of the word was. In our attempt to explain it in simple words, he was lost in translation. He thought that it was just a feast, just any feast with variety of foods on the table. Confidently, Jericho tried to by himself answering “Alam ko ‘yun” (I know that). “Nag-ganun nga kami nung binyag ng pamangkin ko sa Bulacan, eh. May spaghetti, sopas, menudo, kanin, manok at baboy. Ang dami nga, eh.” (We have had that when it was my nephew’s christening at Bulacan. We had spaghetti, soup, menudo, rice, chicken and pork. There are so plenty of food.) Later, we have known the reason behind the boy’s dim knowledge of the word.

He came from a poor family from Bulacan who in attempt to have a better life, migrated in Manila. Unfortunately, they became one of Manila’s thousand s of informal settlers. He was the youngest among the 12 children of a cigarette vendor and his wife. They live in a “kariton” beside a well-known bank just across the Sta. Cruz Parish Church.

Because they are incapable of sustaining their regular meals let alone have themselves a Noche Buena , they went to their grandfather in Caloocan City on the morning of the 25th to have their “pamamasko”.  While on the very Christmas Eve, Jericho and his family quietly let the night pass without recognizing the celebration. When asked what is Christmas to him, he plainly said “Masaya… pagsasaya” (happy… celebration) “Alam mo ba kung bakit may Christmas?” (Do you know why there is Christmas?), the Inkrush asked.  In one word he said “Hindi...” (No) Adding up to this saddening story, he told the Inkrush that the 24th of December is his birthday.

A Voice behind the bars

Another boy, Buknoy, 11, boost up our Christmas cheer when he shared to Inkrush his family’s celebration of Christmas. In the cold of prison cell there they had their Christmas with their mom. Although the boy admitted that they were indeed happy to sleep beside their mom on the Christmas Eve regardless of the place they were in. With no particular expression registered on the boy’s face, he told the Inkrush that the prison held a Christmas party for the inmates and their family. Their food was sponsored by a huge fast-food company packed and prepared. The celebration according to him was just as how it was celebrated outside.

Out of curiosity and with all due respect, the Inkrush asked of the reason as to why his mother ended up in jail. The boy doesn’t seem to mind as he casually told us that his mother was innocent of any crime and that someone has just barked on the wrong tree. For that, they paid the price of almost a year apart from their beloved mother. Buknoy, compared to Jericho, is living a good life only he was apart from his mother.

Will You Sing Back?

Stories like this are just accustomed to nowadays. It is still heart wrenching, though, to hear it from the mouth of the children. While other people, other kids from other parts of the city, of the country, of the world were busy complaining about their not so glamorous Christmas, these are some of those of who can only be thankful for their family in spite of the different crises that befell them. They could have been happier had they known the real deal of Christmas.

How many of the world’s population have the same Christmas like them? How many children have to experience the same as they have?  The tiny light from the star has slowly been put off by poverty and ignorance. With apathy we are slowly wiping the hope off from their system. What we need are stars that would not be selfish to shine not just for themselves but to be a light and guide to those who are in the dark.  Christmas doesn’t have to be a once-in-a-year celebration. Let’s make every day a Christmas day. Let us not be deafened by the clamor of the season. Let us keep the Christmas atmosphere, the spirit of giving, of hope and most especially of love that binds us all.

Cheers to Christ to whom we celebrate the season!

Tattle tales from 2011 MMFF entries

Filipinos always love movies and two days from now, the grandest and much awaited movie festival for Filipino film will finally open, The Metro Manila Film Festival 2011!

So here’s a sneak peek of MMFF 2011 official entries:

First on our list is the imperial movie of MMFF this year, "Enteng Ng Ina Mo". Imperial as the InkRush describe because it is starred by this industry’s royalties. Who would have thought the Comedy Concert Queen Ai-ai Delas Alas and the Box-office king of all time Bossing Vic sotto would be on one gigantic movie? This fantasy-comedy film is the fusion of two movies which have huge followers, the Tanging Ina series and tales of Enteng Kabisote. Yes it’s possible! Directed by Tony Y. Reyes, a lot are expecting this to be the top grosser. This is a joint production by Star Cinema, M-Zet TV Productions, APT Entertainment Production and Octo Arts Films.

Another movie to watch out for is Scenema Concept International and Viva Film’s "Manila Kingpin: The Untold Story of Asiong Salonga". Some film critics have their bets on this Action-biography film which starred by Carla Abellan, Philip Salvador and actor-politician Governor Jorge “ER” Estregan. "Manila Kingpin" is constructed on the story of the notorious gang leader in Tondo named Nicasio "Asiong" Salonga, whose true-to-life interpretations had been depicted in several movie versions since 1961. Though its promotion has been filled with some controversies, Governor ER is still confident that movie goers would go see their movie. Graded A by Cinema Evaluation Board, their Director Tikoy Aguiluz is also in hope for an award for his work.

Would  MMFF still be complete without any entry form the one and only Queen of Philippine Drama, Judy Anne Santos and his real-life househusband Ryan Agoncillo? This comedy film entitled, "My househusband: Ikaw na!" has a new added flavor with the brilliant comedienne Eugene Domingo on their cast. Director Joey Reyes is confident that his stars, especially Judy Ann is a shoo-inn for Best Actress recognition on the awards night (December 28).

One of the leading actors on last year’s top grosser, Senator Bong Revilla is proud to present his movie "Ang Panday 2". With its superb special effects, the actor-politician is confident to take the lead on the festival. The film is very promising to give its audience an action and fantasy filled movie time. Produce by GMA Films and Imus Production, Director Mac Alejandre reveals that grabbing the gold on the awards night is also their goal. Senator Revilla will be joined by Marian Rivera, Iza Calzado, Rhian Ramos, Phillip Salvador, Eddie Garcia and several others. This sequel from Ang Panday (2009) is still written by Carlo J. Caparas.

Since the 80’s, Shake, rattle, and roll never fail to give Filipinos a Christmas chill with three petrifying stories. Now on its 13th installment from Regal Films, many have noticed that its cast is compose of young actors and actresses who are now making their names on the industry. The first episode “Tamawo” which stars Zanjoe Marudo and Maricar Reyes. This is directed by Richard Somes. While the second of the trilogy “Parola” directed by Chris Martinez is top billed by teen stars of both Kapamilya and Kapuso network, Kathryn Bernardo, Louise delos Reyes, and Sam Concepcion. The final episode entitled “Rain, Rain go away” is starred by Edgar Allan Guzman and again Eugene Domingo and is directed by Jerrold Tarog.

Adding another scary feel this Christmas would be from Queen of all media, Kris Aquino. Together with Dingdong Dantes and Angelica Panganiban, "Segunda Mano", was said to leave movie goers a thrilling feeling. This horror-suspense film is produced by Star Cinema, Agostodos Pictures, and CineMedia and directed by Joyce Bernal.

Last but definitely would not be the least among this feast of Filipino movies is Studio 5’s "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow". This drama offering receives lot of good feedbacks from film critics as it was said to have a very strong plot and TV-drama like subplots. A lot also notice how still brilliant the acting prowess of the diamond star Maricel Soriano is.

These feast full event is sure to give Filipinos a variety of movie choices from fantasy, action, a little taste of romance, and amount full of drama and comedy. Surely these films will mark another unforgettable MMFF treat. But whatever choice of movies we will watch the most important thing of the festival is for us Filipinos learn to appreciate locally produce movies.

INKRUSHed

We, the ordinary people of cyberspace thought we can hold back the overflowing ideas that came deep down from our bursting creativity. But we were dead wrong. We cannot suppress the ideas that came forth freely from our megaminds that we have to do something; otherwise, we will suffer unforeseen consequences. We found a vent for these creative juices to flow through the worldwide web. We humbly admit to ourselves that these ideas should not be kept only for ourselves that is why we have chosen to let our thoughts out in the open. There is the internet. Here we are. Thus, INKRUSH was born.

We live and breathe writing. It was from time immemorial that we found out this was one of our lives' purpose, to turn the whole world (or the worldwide web) upside down by just stroking the pen in a smooth surface of a paper. Well, probably, letting our fingertips dance gracefully over our old keyboard with its printed letters fading.

We came from different places, have our different backgrounds and sometimes clash because of our diverse personalities. But we have come to a point where we, the INKRUSH, have to set aside our differences to make a difference, as one, as inkrush.

Maybe we are exaggerating who we are and what we can do. Maybe we are just one of those netizens who makes the web constricted, (if that was possible). Maybe we are just a bunch of airheads trying to be somebody in the internet, just trying to make a scene. Maybe we are. Or maybe we are the web’s next big thing. Who knows? Maybe you will be one of them who will constantly follow our posts and read our articles because you have found out that what we say does make sense in one way or another.

The world (wide web) is our oyster. We might not know what’s ahead but we are ready for it. And while we are at it, we are ready to paint our blog colorful with our bright ideas. So why won’t you come with us as we journey through this exciting phase in our existence as we, the INKRUSH pump up the curiosity in YOU.
