An intangible must-have

Believing in one self is much difficult than believing others. Most of us have a fear of failure, being judge by others or even being rejected. More often than not, young people have these fears. Acceptance is one thing we all want, isn't it? But how come you’ll be accepted if you, yourself can’t believe in yourself? Whether your lacking of the believe you are worthy of respect from others (self-esteem) or whether it’s the absence of believing in yourself (self-confidence); somehow this things held us back from pursuing what we really want to do. Self-confidence and self-esteem are two things that shouldn't be missing on our character. So, here are some points that probably (and hopefully) help you to add enough confidence level in you.

Be physically presentable. This means being beautiful in the way you’re comfortable with, not beautiful in a stereotype-society-dictates way. Dressing up sometimes makes a difference in the way we look at ourselves. The way we see ourselves in the mirror made up our self-image in our mind. Though dressing up doesn’t literally mean wearing a thousand worth of clothing but instead wear something that will reflect who you are. So, if you’re comfortable with wearing casual clothes, stick to it as long as your presentable then you’re still off to go.

Be positive. Changing the way we think can make great things happen. Stop having negative thoughts instead be optimistic. Learn to think positive in everything you do. But wishful thinking is not enough; you should also do some actions. For instance, if you are having a difficult time stop complaining, instead believe that you can and focus on how you could overcome it. Thinking positive and doing something goes hand-in-hand. Start acting in a positive way and soon you’ll notice a difference.

Take little steps. Achieving something big boosts up our confidence but little achievements also count. It’s not wrong to dream big but it’s wrong to push yourself to much just to achieve that huge goal of yours. A lot of us tend to shoot for the moon and when they fail, they get discouraged and back down. Instead you can set small goals that are achievable on your current situation. The more you achieve something, the more you will feel good about yourself. And it also prepares you on taking the risk on your big dream. Take little steps toward that goal and you will go far without even noticing it.

Be yourself. It is the most important thing out of all the things mentioned above. Feel good about yourself no matter what. If you really know who you are, you will not care when someone is putting you down. It is important to know one so others can know you. The way you look at yourself will surely reflect on how others will look at you.

Having enough level of self-confidence and self-esteem is essential for ones character. First, believe in yourself and the rest will follow.

Tribute to the King of Comedy: Dolphy

He brought laughter to millions of Filipinos for decades. He sometimes brought us tears. He inspired us in different ways. His heart for giving and humility is bigger than the huge success he obtained. And he is none other than the one and only Philippines’ King of Comedy, Dolphy.

For the more than 65 years he spent making us smile, cry and of course laugh our hearts out, let us all pay tribute to a King. Let us all reminisce his memories that will always be in our hearts... forever.

The journey of Dolphy

Dolphy or Rodolfo Vera Quizon, Sr. in real life wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was second eldest of ten children of Melencio Quizon and Salud Vera-Quizon. At a young age, Dolphy started selling peanuts and watermelon seeds at movie theaters. He also did odd jobs including shining shoes; attaching buttons at a pants factory; sorting bottles by size; working as a stevedore at the pier; trading; and driving calesas.

In his free time he regularly watched stage shows at the Life Theater and the Avenue Theater incluing shows of his favorite performers the comedy duo Pugo and Togo, and the dancers Benny Mack and Bayani Casimiro. Dolphy was turning 17 when Benny Mack got him a job as a chorus dancer for a month at the Avenue Theater and subsequently on the Lyric Theater.

It was the father of his friend actor Fernando Poe, Jr., who first paved the way and gave him a break in films playing bit roles as a character actor. Fernando Poe Sr. cast Dolphy in Dugo at Bayan (I Remember Bataan), billed as Rodolfo Quizon.

Since then, Dolphy incessantly given shows on film and radio. In 1952, he joined Sampaguita Pictures where he had done some of his remarkable movies. This includes Jack en Jill, Silveria, Captain Barbell and Facifica Falayfay.

After his contract with Sampaguita expired, Eugenio “Geny” Lopez Jr. got him into television on Channel 3. His first TV show was with ABS-CBN on "Buhay Artista" (Actor's Life), a concept by Geny Lopez and Ading Fernando. He also started doing movies for independent studios like LEA Productions, Balatbat Productions, Filipinas Productions, Zultana Productions and Fernando Poe, Jr.'s D’Lanor Productions. He also ventures on producing films and established the RVQ Productions in 1965.

Two of the most prominent television shows we remember when we hear Dolphy were John En Marsha and Home along da riles.

John En Marsha started in 1971 on RPN channel 9. He played the role of Johnny Puruntong with Nida Blanca as Marsha, his wife in the sitcom. Dolphy also worked with comediennes Matutína and Dely Atay-Atayan, then child star Maricel Soriano and his own son Rolly Quizon.

The next successful TV venture was Home Along da Riles in 1992 on ABS-CBN with Nova Villa as his wife and his real life son, Vandolph. It was one of the longest running Philippine TV shows of all time which dominated the primetime from 1992 to 2003.

Dolphy proves his also a versatile actor. He showcased it on his astonishing movies like Lino Brocka’s Ang Tatay kong Nanay and Markova: Comfort Gay, in which he won the Prix de la Meilleure Interpretation in Brussels, Belgium for playing Walterina Markova.

Dolphy received a lot of prestigious awards throughout his career. One of it was the Grand Collar of the Order of the Golden Heart given by President Benigno Aquino III in 2010. It is the highest award given to a private citizen by the President of the Philippines. Dolphy was cited for his contributions to the entertainment industry and for his charitable and philanthropic works.

Through the Years

For more than 20 years, Dolphy has been with his partner Zsazsa Padilla. Though their relationship was criticized at first because of their age differences, they’ve shown the public their love for each other was never ending and love isn’t measured by age.

On her eulogy, Zsazsa made almost everyone cried. In her heart felt speech he remembered Dolphy or her “Lovey” as someone who is very supportive and loving as a husband and as a father. She allowed her emotions to rule over her as she give thanks to the love of her life “for being so proud of me, for giving me my two girls, for being so thoughtful, and for doing your best to provide for us.”

“Loving the man, I came to accept all that came with him — his legacy, his personality when not in front of the camera, and of course his children. Hindi po naging madali ang lahat ng ‘yon, pero he was worth it.” she said.

Before her 11-minute tribute ended she sang a few verses of “Through The Years” popularized by Kenny Rogers before her voice trailed with these closing words:

“Kagaya ng huling naibulong mo sa akin bago ka mamaalam, lovey ko, I love you.”

Remembering Dolphy

Dolphy battled COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder) for about six or eight years. As Zsazsa said in her eulogy, Dolphy his last few weeks with his family:

“To all his other kids, ang inyong Daddy, Papang, Papa, nagpaalam siya with peace in his heart. Itong limang linggo na magkakasama tayo sa ospital, mas nagkakausap tayo, mas nagkakaintindihan. And of course, ang ating common bond, ang ating pagmamahal para kay Dolphy.”

For most of us, he’s the King of Comedy that made us laugh for a lot of years, but for his family he is a person with a big heart, a caring friend and a loving father and husband. With all he achieved in his career he stayed his feet on the ground.

Filipinos will always have a smile on their faces whenever they remember Mang Dolphy; for he is one of those people that had a great impact not just on the entertainment industry but in our hearts.

For all the laughter you had brought us… Salamat, Tito Dolphy!

Distorted Love, Disturbed Morality, Divided Humanity

It is not fresh from the oven anymore but the issue of Same-Sex marriage is still hot as a newly baked pie. Before the month of June where wedding bells seems to be all so loud, why don’t we tackle an issue of love that “transcends” even the morality of human race layer by layer, like a baked pie? Love surpasses all things. Maybe in this area, love will escape the fangs of moral judgment and go beyond all the fences that love isn’t allowed to be, or maybe not.

 When “Opposites Attract”

Tracing back the Biblical History, God made a Man in his image and when he saw that it is not good for a man to be alone, he made a Woman, out of the same man that he made. Hence, the first couple were made and lived. They have multiplied and filled the earth and here we are now breathing, continuing to fill the earth.

There were a man and a woman and from them springs love. When the time is ripe for two lovers, they will desire to undergo the matrimony of marriage and have their happily-ever-after story as possible. This is the normal setting that we have grown up to. This is the customary setting that we are taught and told about. And this is the setting that we ended up desiring to be in.

Man and woman ends up together primarily because of love. Marriage is the result of the ardent desire of a couple to be together “in the name of love”. But what is          love really?

Love, according to Merriam-Webster, is an “affection and tenderness felt by lovers”. (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/love)

Could this love be applicable and reasonable for “man-to-man” “woman-to-woman” relationships?

In the Bible, Genesis 1: 27(KJV) says “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them”. This statement is commonly used by some religious communities in emphasizing their opposition regarding the “unusual” kind of relationship. But let us skip this point to further elaborate later and just focus on the “love” talk. We believe that everyone has the right and is entitled to love and be loved but why have we made an exception to what kind of love is acceptable?

When “Opposites Attract” Isn’t working

There are existing kinds of love such as Storge, Phileo, Eros, and Agape. Such terms define love in various manner but where does the “controversial” kind of love fall under? Or is it better to say that it does not fall under any categories given but under the harsh judgment of “unblemished” society.

Different views and opinions take off when the subject matter is raised. Many who are for equality are surefire Pro. And those “righteous” enough may say otherwise.

Aside from the previous mentioned verse, this might back-up the claim of the Anti-group:

Genesis 2:18, 21-24 (KJV)

18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.

21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof.

22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Same sex relationships - and marriage in particular will longtime be under the scrutinizing eyes of the society probably because, as some would throw the blame, of the Church’s influence among its community. Several dominant personalities in the service of the Church, in Catholicism specifically, have thrown explosive statements regarding this matter that bombarded and really shook the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community. Others have quoted bible verses to prove that their unbelief in Same Sex marriage is based on a solid foundation and not just to oppose per se. This debate among the people or group of people involved will surely go on and on until time no one can tell but one thing is for sure, that God and His Church will always “stand in the way”.

When it all attracts is opposition

Yes, this subject will probably last longer than most of us want it to be. And surely this case will not rest because we are so caught up with our philosophy and beliefs that we created for ourselves. Some of us, if not most, have deliberately used God and His Word just to make a point but do we really understand what He is trying to say? Both parties, the Anti and the Pro has one way or another conformed God’s Word to their principle when it should be the other way around. And with this we create a larger division among ourselves when we should be united. Even Jesus Himself has prayed for this yet our different “moral” values prevent us to cooperate in fulfilling the heart’s desire of Lord.

Shouldn’t the Church be the one to teach us and help us in deepening our faith and understanding God’s love for humanity? Then why are some blaming them for starting the fire?

Shouldn’t we as people and beloved creation of our God be following Him every day of our lives? Then why are we so trying hard to live our lives OUR way by our own standards?

We are no judges. We do not have the right to judge other people for what they are doing for we ourselves are not perfect. Only God can do that. If this is about morality then let us all drop the subject. Do we live according to the moral standard, of whom? And because we are no judges why judge other people?

If we think our brothers and sisters are on the wrong side then we should tell them. But we should not push them to the wall when they do not agree. We are all called love one another. Things should be done and settled as an end result of love not just to rub it in their face and impose that we are better human beings.

This issue first and foremost was thought to be conceived by love. Why don’t we resolve this in a very loving way? We are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. We are to love as how our God loves us. Maybe we could find ourselves in harmony if we first do what God has told us to do, not to argue and debate about unimportant matters but to love one another.

The Vitress x Studio Fix by Alex Carbonell Experience

I am joining many online contests for quite some time now. I won a few movie tickets from blah-this-and-blah-that but that was it. Win or not, I enjoyed joining them, nonetheless.

Recently, my favorite hair cuticle product, Vitress launched an online contest via Twitter together with a well-known celebrity, Solenn Heusaff.

Here's the promo mechanics:

You just have to answer the question posted by Miss Solenn by watching her first webisode entitled Maaasuyan Mo Kaya?

Excerpt from their Youtube channel, "Watch how Solenn was able to help Simba SHINE and transform from a wild one to a fierce runaway goddess!"

How easy was that! No wasted energy and money! All you need is SHEER LUCK and DETERMINATION because you're not the only one who's joining.

The PRIZE at stake: A (FREE) FABULOUS SALON MAKEOVER courtesy of @officialvitress!

Who could say NO to that and I think that there's nothing wrong with a little CHANGE!

If you want to watch the Maaayusan Mo Kaya? video, you can watch it. Don't forget to subscribe them via Youtube!

By the way, here are the video stills for the answers:

Bananas (peels), Orange (peels) & Peanut Shells :)

June 18,Monday

The day i've been dreading for.. announcement of winners! I didn't know that I could won the contest because I got a REALLY COMPETITIVE rival but when THEN OUT OF NOWHERE, I received a tweet from Solenn Heusaff stating that i won the Vitress MMK contest!

June 21,Monday

Members of the Vitress team who had been contacting me for days about my prize are very helpful and accommodating :)

After interacting with them through texting and twitter, I received a message from them about the schedule of my ULTRA FAB MAKEOVER at a high-end salon. :) Yehey!

From what I have read from magazines, Alex Carbonell of the Studio Fix Salon is one of the prominent names in the beauty industry and he had been the training director for Bench Fix Salon. If you want to know more about him, feel free to browse PhilSTAR's article about His Hair Highnessand StyleBible.Ph's review about his new salon, Studio Fix by Alex Carbonell amongothers.

By the way, the author shares her hair history:

Naturally, I have a really curly and frizzy hair or esponghado in Tagalog. My hair had been rebonded/haircolored for many times since 3rd year High School (an age where you are accepted to have a rebonding treatment) until my 3rd year in College. Since then, my hair became damaged from the chemicals that the salons used in straightening treatments. Fortunately, I have been using toVitress' Straightening Hair Polish for years that helped in preventing further damage and split ends. :D "

June 25, Sunday

The Judgement day, i mean MAKEOVER DAY. LOL.

A friend of mine accompanied the author to go to Greenbelt 5 because we planned to watch a PBA game after. We arrived there few hours before my makeover schedule.

We met with Ms. Nina and Vitress' brand manager Ms. Joanna at the salon hallway by 1PM. They were really helpful and easy to talk with. Unfortunately, Mr. Alex Carbonell was out of town but I was handled by the salon's professional stylists namely Mr. Hermes (maybe) and Ate Tin.

After talking about what hair services that I should do, we finally decided that they would do my HAIR COLOR and HAIR CUT.

For the hair color, they decided to do the OMBRE HAIR COLOR so that it wouldn't "shock" my hair. Here's an example:

We, (including the Vitress team), didn't expect that it would take up almost 4 hours to finish but it's all worth it!

Before shot. With Vitress' brand manager, Ms. Joanna :)
Sitting nervously while waiting for the stylist.

Prep time courtesy of  Ate Tin. Please excuse my eyebags. lol

Smile :)

Having my hair dyed ala OMBRE.

TWO SIDES OF THE COIN. see the difference of my hair when blow-dried or not.
Having my haircut done.
Voila! The final result :)

See the difference:

Dressing up the Parisian way

On one droning day while scanning some back issue of a Fashion Magazine, there’s this article which caught an attention. It was telling about how people are drawn to everything that is so ‘it’ especially in fashion. We always want something that the society surely accepts. Mostly a lot of people are afraid to break the rules in fashion but there’s this one exception… the French way of street dressing. Here are some tips for dressing like a Parisian from legendary model Ines de la Fressange's book, Parisian Chic: A Style Guide. Ten ways to dress like a Parisian.

10. Jeans with gem-encrusted sandals (not sneakers).
9. A pencil skirt with ballet flats (not with heels).
8. A sequined sweater with men’s trousers (not with a skirt).
7. A diamond necklace with a denim shirt during the day (and not a black dress at night).
6. Loafers with short ad even with socks (not with long slack and no socks).
5. An evening dress with ultra plain, open toed sandals (not with the gem-encrusted evening variety).
4. A pearl necklace with a rock n’ roll t-shirt (not with a simple shift dress).
3. A chiffon print dress with biker boots (not with branded neo ballet flats).
2. A tux jacket with sneakers (femme fatale stilettos).
1. An evening dress with a straw hand bag (not with gold clutch).

French street dressing is not being ‘it’ rather it almost breaking all the rules in fashion; it even doesn’t care about signature dresses or fashion items. But what is most important according to Ines de la Fressange: “You must feel good on what you wear”
